Focus (SS) Camilo says the drums were used to communicate. What does he mean by that? Why were the drums used in this way? Follow Up (SS) What are some of the instruments, musical forms and dance styles associated with Latino culture? For example, what is salsa and rhumba? Do they come from the same place? Map various Latino musical styles, dances and instruments to the islands from where they came. Can they be linked to other places like Africa and Europe?
I would use this video clip with my sixth graders as part of a cultural lesson showing the importance of the written word in the ancient mayan civilization. The video clip shows how four of the ancient mayan books that were burned by the Spanish priests were salvaged due to the fact that they were also written on surfaces that could not be burned. These books give way to understanding the mayan civilization and their ideas about time. I would use this clip to demonstrate the mayan number system and have the students use what they learned in the video to show examples of their own, self created number examples. I would also have the students come up with questions after viewing the video to check for understanding.
